APA Basics
APA requires the use of hanging indents and double spacing for citations in a word processor; however, check with your instructor, as some instructors request single spacing!
Watch these:
Author: Use initial of author's first name (not entire first name)
Publication year: Enter after author with ( ), not at end
Journal title and volume: Use italics (not underlines)
APA Style Format

Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition (at Reference Desk or Reference Stacks [REF BF76.7 .P83 2010]
Help with American Psychological Association Format
Refer to the following citation guides for style examples from the APA Sixth Edition:
- APA Formatting and Style Guide from The OWL at Purdue
- APA Documentation from The Writing Center @ UW-Madison
The following citation builder assists in formatting citations in APA 6th edition format; users are ultimately responsible for their own citations so proof for spelling, capitalization, etc.
- KnightCite - Select APA Format from Calvin College Hekman Library
UW-Stout subscribes to RefWorks which manages your citations as well as having a citation builder and importing citations from several of Stout's databases; however, it still uses the 5th edition of format.
Major change in the Sixth Edition
One of the main changes in the sixth edition affects references for journals:
- Include a digital object identifier (DOI) in periodical citations when provided.
- Look for the DOI toward the bottom of a record in the index.
- Example:
Olson-Johnson, Z, A., & Smith, J. R. (2009). Example of DOI in reference ciation.
Library Reference Journal, 22, 439-440. doi:10.1151/j.1467-2987.2004.00144.x
If no DOI is assigned and the article is retrieved online, include the page URL for the periodical. No retrieval date is needed. Example:
Bookman, A. Z. (2008). Example of article from online without a DOI. Library
Reference Journal, 21, 251-259. Retrieved from http://journals/pre0040001a.htm
If the article retrieved is from an online aggragator database such as EbscoHost, do not include that.
For MORE CHANGES, see box below.
More Changes
- Space twice after punctuation marks at the end of a sentence (p.88)
- Continue to space once after periods separating parts of a reference citation (p.87)
- A retrieval date is used, in the citation reference, only if the source may change over time, i.e. wikis, blogs (p.192)
- A retrieval date is not used for databases or websites as in APA 5th ed.
- Database information is not included in a reference (i.e. Retrieved from EBSCOhost) (p.192) Instead, do this:
- For citations which contain DOI#, include the DOI Number with no period at end (p. 198-199)
- For other citations, find journal homepage and provide that URL (p.191)
- Can no longer use n.p. (no pagination) when quoting online material without pagination (i.e. website, html document) (p.171) Instead, cite heading title (when available) and paragraph number.
- Grey literature (non-traditional literature formats)
- Blogs, discussion lists, YouTube are recognized as acceptable sources (pp.214-215) and included in references.
- Individual email correspondence is still considered personal communication and is not included in references.
Hanging Indents (from Microsoft Help)
- Select all the lines of a citation.
- On the horizontal ruler, drag the Hanging Indent marker to the position where the indent starts. If the horizontal ruler that runs along the top of the document is not visible, click the View Ruler button at the top of the vertical scroll bar.
