Limiting Searches to Specific Media

Use the Stout Library Catalog to identify and locate books and media (books on tape or CD, videos, music CDs, DVDs) for many topics. Search for a specific author or title by conducting an "Author" or "Title" search.  Keyword and subject searching are available, as well.

Limit to Popular Movies

  • Sample search for movies in video format; use these keywords:

    • videorecording [all of these] AND
    • feature film? [as a phrase]
    • Further refine your search by entering a title, author or subject in the third search box.
  • Sample search for movies in DVD format; use these keywords:

    • DVD [all of these] AND
    • feature film? [as a phrase]
    • Further refine your search by entering a title, author or subject in the third search box.
 

Limit to Music CDs

You will need to limit your search to the format of Musical Recording before entering keywords. See the search box sample above for a visual for the samples below.

  • Step 1. On the catalog screen (as shown above in the search box sample) click on the button.Set limits button
  • Step 2. On the next screen, under Format: select Musical RecordingLimit Format to Musical Recording
  • Step 3. Click on the "click to LIMIT search by:" button again.
  • Step 4. Now enter your keywords in the appropriate search boxes.

Sample search for musical CD's; use these keywords:

  • compact disc [as a phrase]
  • Set Limits to Musical Recording
  • Further refine your search by entering a title, singer or subject in the second search box.

 

Limit to Audiobooks

Audiobooks, also called books on tape, are available in both cassette and CD formats but require a separate search for each format. See the search box sample above for a visual for the samples below.

  • Sample search for audiobook on cassette; use these keywords:

    • audiobooks [all of these] AND
    • sound cassette? [as a phrase]
    • Further refine your search by entering a title, author or subject in the third search box.
  • Sample search for audiobook on CD; use these keywords:

    • audiobooks [all of these] AND
    • sound disc? [as a phrase]
    • Further refine your search by entering a title, author or subject in the third search box.
