Formatting Tips

Font: Times New Roman, 12 point. NOTE: Examples that are used in the Paraphrasing and Quotations sections of this guide are in Times Roman, 12 pont font.

Set-Up:  Double-spaced.  1" margins all around the page. Each major section (e.g. Table of Contents, Chapter I, References, starts at the top of a new page.

Running Headers: Neither a header or running head are used in UW-Stout theses.

Pagination: Page numbers should appear in the upper right hand corner. Use Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, etc.) beginning with the title page and continuing through the entire document. This formatting is set up in the template.

Acknowledgements: The Acknowledgements header should not appear in bold.  Acknowledgements are not part of the scholarly work and should not be listed in the Table of Contents.

Spacing: Space TWICE at the end of sentences. Space once after commas, colons, semicolons, punctuation marks, periods separating parts of a reference citation, and periods after the initials in personal names (e. g., J. K.).

Acronyms: Use acronyms or initialisms appropriately. For example, OSHA is an acronym for Occupational Safety and Health Administration. If your paper discusses OSHA write out Occupational Safety and Health Administration followed by the acronym (OSHA) the first time and then afterwards just use the acronym, i.e. OSHA. However, when using an acronym in the title, headings, definitions, abstract, do not use acronyms.

Contractions: Avoid using contractions (e. g., write “do not” instead of “don’t”). Contractions are only acceptable when included in a quote.

Numbers: Use words to express numbers less than 10 and figures to express numbers 10 and above. Three and 25 are correct. Exceptions to the rule:

Use figures (numbers - not words) for percentages (7%), scores, dates, ages, and numbers before a unit of measurement (5 cm).

Use words for a number that begins a sentence, title or heading (when possible, re-word to avoid beginning with a number), and common fractions (e. g., two-thirds).
